Feedback Group: Your Long‑term Project
Are you in need of feedback on your current project? Or are you ready to start a new one but aren't sure how to begin? This course is designed for photographers and media artists who are ready to start a new project, or are looking for support on a project they’re already working on. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows, film festivals, and on theater stages throughout Europe, the United States, South America, and Asia. Her photography has been published internationally and is a part of both private and institutional collections, including the International Center of Photography. She has received numerous artistic grants and has been awarded residencies in Rome, Paris, Warsaw, Beijing, and Tainan (Taiwan). A focus of her activities has been working with live performance, including producing a multimedia piece that toured in New York City, Austria, and Korea.
Anja has been teaching live online photography classes since 2015, as well as in-person workshops in New York, Europe, China, and Taiwan. Originally from Salzburg, Austria, she divides her time between New York and Vienna.

How to Light Environmental Portraits
Do you struggle with lighting? Learn on-location lighting using the least amount of equipment possible. We will concentrate on environmental portraits in a variety of situations, in indoor and outdoor locations. We will cover on- and off-camera flash photography fundamentals: exposure, distance, mixing with ambient light, sync, TTL, light meters, the pros and cons of flash versus continuous lighting (LED lights), as well as the use of light modifiers. In addition, we will discuss how to communicate a message through lighting and how to best position and interact with your subject. Through weekly shooting assignments, students get to practice on their own and will over time improve the quality of their images. We'll also analyze how the masters of lighting use artificial light on location.

Seeing in Black and White for Digital Photographers
Have you experimented with shooting in black and white but were not quite happy with the results? Do you love the depiction of the world in black and white photographs and want to harness that abstracted quality in your own work? In this class, students will learn to make monochromatic photographs of depth and clarity that rival the masterpieces produced in a darkroom. We go beyond thinking of black and white as a digital filter, and explore how an image’s tonal range, balance, and contrast, affects the mood, emotion, and meaning of the picture. Additionally, students are exposed to the powerful tools available in Adobe Lightroom Classic to make purposeful conversions to black and white—superior to the flat desaturated images that are produced by default. Through weekly tutorials, assignments, shooting exercises, lectures, and instructor feedback, students will improve their visualization skills and gain confidence in a black and white digital workflow.

Unique weekly exercises will challenge you to experiment with creative approaches to storytelling and to try out new techniques and ways of taking pictures. Through group critique, we’ll analyze composition and we’ll also seek inspiration by examining the work of a variety of photographers. At the end of the class, students will be energized and inspired to expand their photographic vision.
A special highlight of the workshop will be a live, online gallery tour with commentary of the exhibition “Francesca Woodman . On Being an Angel” at C/O Berlin (currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions). Woodman’s visual language often encompasses interiors — just the sort of imagery available to many of us now.

Discovering the Poetry in Nighttime Photography
Nighttime is magical — cityscapes buzz with electricity and in nature, trees and meadows are glazed with moonlight — this scarcity of light creates its own particular drama. Taking pictures at night opens up exciting new ways of exploring our surroundings: the streets of our neighborhood, landscapes and cityscapes, or simply the light in our own home. Through weekly exercises we will explore seeing and composing in low light to capture the eery and poetic mood that low light has to offer. Technical details like long exposure and lowlight camera settings, working with a tripod, and dealing in post with digital grain and noise reduction will be covered. An essential part of this class will be to discuss and analyze artistic and technical approaches by other photographers who have worked extensively in low light. As W. Eugene Smith said: “Available light is any damn light that is available.”

Photobook Intensive: Structure and Meaning
Would you like to make a photobook, but you struggle trying to shape your individual images into a cohesive form? How do you get your audience to understand what your book is about? In this 4-week intensive, students will learn to read a photobook holistically and understand its structural and conceptual elements. Through editing and sequencing exercises, we’ll explore image-to-image connections that further the overall meaning and make a book come together as a whole. Students will learn a powerful workflow to guide them through the process of creating a book — from selecting images, laying out sequences, and constructing a maquette, to producing a finished book dummy. Class lectures will include analysis of important photobooks and technical considerations for preparing photographs for book printing. Students will gain insight and experience into how to craft a book that is more than the sum of its parts. The emphasis is to understand the structure and methods of making a photobook, so it’s not necessary to have a completed body of work for this class.

Assignment Workflow from a Pro: Plan, Shoot, Deliver — Repeat!
Photographer Marco Bello (Reuters, Bloomberg, Getty Images, and others) will share an in-depth look at his workflow for a variety of assignments — from editorial and commercial to photojournalism. What’s the assignment about? What are the client’s expectations? How do you prepare? We’ll cover everything from developing an idea, handling equipment, and what to bring to a shoot, to file formats, pre-editing in camera, and sending files while on the job. And more: travel logistics, getting access and working with fixers, dealing with obstacles and troubleshooting, and getting things done fast. Learn about post-production techniques — importing, editing, metadata, and tips to speed up the Lightroom workflow. We’ll also cover business aspects like sharing work on social media and invoicing. By the end of the class, students will have learned new tools and resources to develop their own set of best practices. This class is a unique opportunity — both for students who want to be better prepared to shoot photography assignments, and also for working photographers who want to improve their workflow.
This is a conversational lecture class with no assignments.
Marco Antonio Bello is an award-winning Reuters photojournalist, based in Caracas (Venezuela) and Miami. The Expanded Self‑portrait: Exploring Traditional and Alternative Methods of Personal Expression
While every image we create contains an element of the self, only the self-portrait holds the photographer’s distinct personal perspective at its center. As we grapple with fluctuating times and shifting notions of identity, we’ll explore the ways in which the practice of self-portraiture can also shift. How can we challenge and expand the boundaries of this way of making work? Beginning with weekly exercises, students will experiment with a variety of alternative approaches to the self-portrait — still-life, landscape, portraiture, and more conceptual and collaborative practices, such as text art – alongside traditional methods, with the aim of finding an individual approach to the expression of the self. The work of photographers who have used a variety of modes of self-portraiture will be presented for robust discussion. Supported by in-class critiques, students will end the course with a cohesive portfolio of self-portraits.
Samantha Box is a Jamaican-born, Bronx-based photographer. In her studio-based practice, she uses self-portraiture, sound, and installation to articulate her personal diasporic/Caribbean experience. Her previous documentary work focused on New York City's community of LGBTQ youth of color, and was widely recognized, notably with a NYFA Fellowship (2010), and shown, most prominently, as part of the ICP Museum’s Perpetual Revolution exhibition (2017). This work is part of the permanent collections of the Open Society Foundation, EN FOCO, and Light Work.

Architecture and Narrative: A Sense of Place
How can we use the genre of architectural photography to tell a more personal story of place? This course invites you to engage with architecture to develop your photography skills, style, and practice overall. You will focus your camera on an architectural site that is significant to you and create a short series, or narrative, that moves beyond architectural photography as a faithful representation of the built environment, to include your personal encounter, response and experience of place. Through weekly exercises, discussion, and critique, your work will develop while we draw inspiration from established architectural photographers, past and present.
This class is suitable for both beginners and experienced photographers who want to engage in a creative way with the built environment, space, place, and narrative. We’ll also cover composition, camera angles, and perspective as well as the role and relationship between aperture and shutter speed for exposure and focus.

Black and White Photography Refined
Have you admired the lyrical black and white work of other photographers and wondered how you could bring those dramatic qualities to your own images? Are you comfortable converting your digital photographs to black and white, but need help getting them to fully express the emotion you had in mind? In this class, students will learn how monochromatic images can be refined to express deeper meaning. We’ll explore how black and white allows for radically different tonal interpretations of the same photograph, and how that can alter our perception of the subject matter. Through analysis and discussion of both contemporary photography and student work, we’ll examine the character of black and white vs. color. We’ll also dive into technical considerations (exposure, processing, workflow) and scrutinize the variety of tools available to the digital photographer. Through weekly assignments and shooting exercises, students will expand their understanding of the language of black and white photography, and apply the lessons with certainty to their own work.

This work has been exhibited at the Houston Center of Photography (2019), and the Andrew Freedman House (2020). In Spring 2021, Box will join the Bronx Museum of the Arts’ AIM Fellowship program.
Samantha holds a certificate in Photojournalism and Documentary Studies from the International Center of Photography (2006). She also holds an MFA in Advanced Photographic Studies from the International Center of Photographer/Bard College (2019).

The Life You’re In: The Joy and Pathos of Autobiography
This course will help students step back from their own unfolding stories and create work about their life, whether based on memories or the current situation. Memory exercises will unlock personal material — interests, preoccupations, and connections to current circumstances — to help find a productive direction. Learning to be specific and authentic is key; fears, inhibitions, and practical obstacles will be discussed and confronted to allow students to mine their most compelling experiences. Many references will be made to contemporary photography, as well as to examples from the history of photography, art, and film. Any subject is viable as long as the photographer is sufficiently moved by it. Form follows content, and the photographer’s choice of approach will be analyzed for its applicability and expressiveness.

The Photobook: Structure and Meaning
Would you like to make a photobook, but struggle trying to shape your individual images into a cohesive form? How do you get your audience to understand what your book is about? In this 6-week class (an expanded version of our popular 4-week intensive) students learn to read a photobook holistically and understand its structural and conceptual elements. Unlike the 4-week intensive, students will be encouraged to begin using their own photographs for the homework exercises.

Creating a Video Diary: Intro to Multimedia Storytelling
Some stories are best told using a variety of components in addition to photographs — like video, audio, and text — to add a deeper dimension. In this course you’ll learn the basics of video/multimedia creation and it’s workflow, using easy tools to expand your storytelling skills. We’ll cover practical information on how to script a story, conduct interviews, and film with your camera or phone, as well as editing basics (using Adobe Premiere Pro) and publishing your video on a variety of platforms. We’ll analyze videos for inspiration and discuss creative production choices, including framing, camera movement, editing concepts, and sound. There are no boundaries; students can experiment with using archival material (old images or letters) or mixing documentary and biography with fiction. Through weekly tutorials and exercises, students will produce their own short 3-minute video diary or “letter.” Class sessions are 2.5 hours.

Still Life and the “Do‑It‑Yourself” Home Studio
From the poetic paintings of the Dutch Masters to commercial products in catalogs, the still life is ubiquitous in art and photography. How can we express ideas by arranging a collection of objects? How can lighting convey emotions? In this course, we will look closely at artists working in the genre and learn how to communicate ideas, as well as manipulate lighting in a do-it-yourself environment. Understanding how light behaves will allow us to manipulate it through reflections, diffusion, and blocking. Supported by in-class critiques, students will end the course with a cohesive portfolio of still life photographs.

What a great class — I learned a lot and found it very inspirational!
—Jessica (New York City)
Anja and Edward did a great job creating this class. I especially enjoyed the Hong Kong films featured in the class — they were new to me. I must say that the class made me think of films in a different way. It was strange to me that I reacted to the assignments as real challenges that made me quite nervous — a sure sign that the class was a true growth experience. I hope I can take another course with you someday down the road.

Multimedia Love Letter
Are you craving connection with others? When was the last time you felt seen and heard or expressed your feelings and gratitude towards your loved ones? It’s easy to feel isolated in these socially-distanced times. In this 8-session class, we will slow down together and get in touch with our senses and reflect on our relationship with ourselves and others with the goal of creating a multimedia “love letter” you can share. Through a series of prompts and exercises, students will learn visual-thinking strategies to analyze image structure and composition, practice the power of intentional gaze, and learn deep listening skills to make meaningful connections and build intimacy. We’ll utilize a blend of photography, video, text, sound, and storytelling to create a multimedia love letter using a website builder (no coding necessary).
This class will take place on a personal level; an open heart is required. This is not a technical class, but students will need a device that can record video and audio — anything from a smartphone to a Zoom recorder (we’ll go over basic recording and interviewing techniques).

Diving Deep: A Monthly Critique Group: Spring/Summer
This group meets once per month and is for photographers and media artists who are looking for long-term support and continuity while working on a project. We’ll discuss different approaches to the best way of telling the story, to fit each student’s individual project. During these monthly critiques we’ll also cover story structure, research, composition, editing, and documentary and conceptual approaches. This group is also a way to simply talk about anything related to photography to get inspired: we’ll look at other photographers’ work, discuss technical issues, and talk about how to best present the final project: on the web, in book form, an exhibition, or as a multimedia piece. A guest speaker (to be announced) will present their work and share their experience. This class is limited to 7 students only and each session runs for 3 hours with a 10 minute break. Includes a private 1-on-1 session.
Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows, film festivals, and on theater stages throughout Europe, the United States, South America, and Asia.

The Artful Still Life
NEW SECTION ADDED! CLICK HERE
Still lifes — artful compositions of objects and light — are one of the most enduring forms of imagery. As powerful and complicated as a portrait or as complex as a landscape, they can harness the power of social and personal symbolism to create meaningful commentary on our world, lives, and identities. Students will gain an understanding of the aesthetic foundations of the still life by examining the visual language of both painters and photographers and their methods of constructing still life images. Through weekly exercises, students will learn ways to apply and expand these threads of historical and contemporary approaches to their own still life creations, whether constructed in a studio or found in other environments. Supported by in-class critique, students will end the course with a cohesive portfolio of works that will guide their practice in the future.

The Art of Street Photography: Capturing the Unexpected
It’s crucial for a street photographer to be open and ready to face new situations — particularly in these unpredictable times. We have to be aware of the unexpected as it unfolds in front of us, and also have the presence of mind to capture those fleeting moments. This class will focus on the important elements that help create captivating street photography: the interplay of light and shadow, gesture, color vs. black and white, layers, and more. Exercises will introduce you to different techniques that will help sharpen your skills and create more powerful photos, whether you're an advanced street photographer or just starting out. We’ll cover candid street photography, how to approach strangers for street portraits (even in these times), and we’ll work through some of the tricky ethics of our practice. Weekly assignments and critique will develop your eye and instincts, and we’ll analyze what makes a good street photograph by studying historical and contemporary examples.

Image and Text: Extending Your Message
If words can paint a picture, and a picture is worth a thousand words, what happens when we combine the two? This course invites you to explore the relationship between image, text, and meaning. Each week we'll explore a different approach to combining photography and text — from adding words to images as a way to describe, inform or illustrate a subject, to creating or expanding personal and political narratives. We'll discuss and draw inspiration from the work of photographers who combine image and text in distinct ways and we’ll experiment with how the type of language, typography, and writing style we employ impacts the meaning and message of our own work. This course is for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the role and potential of text within photographic practice or seeks inspiration and support in developing a personal style.

Collaboration as an Ethical Documentary Practice
What would an ethical way to practice documentary photography look like? This class suggests that collaboration between the image-maker and the people or communities who consent to be photographed can provide a path toward an ethical practice. We'll examine documentary photography, beginning with its origins often as a tool of imperialism and racism, to the ways in which those visual tropes continue to exist in contemporary practice. In response, we will discuss projects by photographers who work collaboratvely, identifying the methodologies that exemplify this practice. In this class, students will begin a collaborative relationship with a person or community that consents to be photographed; practices for COVID-safe collaboration will be discussed. Through weekly exercises — portraiture, oral histories, archival mining, reimaging and re-creation — students will gain an understanding of the foundations of this method of working. Supported by in-class critique, students will finish the course with a cohesive portfolio of works that will guide their practice in the future. Class sessions are 2.5 hours.

Ceci n’est pas une photo: Using Surrealism’s Toolbox in Your Photography
Our understanding of surrealism has become watered down into a set of mainstream clichés: the once-revolutionary images of melting clocks, burning giraffes, and floating rocks of Dali and Magritte are so common that we see them more as design elements on shower curtains and mouse pads than as art. In a series of weekly assignments, we’ll rummage through the surrealist’s toolbox and use key concepts and techniques like chance, juxtaposition, collage, automatism, and l’informe (formlessness) to expand our photographic vocabulary and rekindle the revolutionary spirit of this movement. Taking Rosalind Krauss’s excellent study of surrealism — The Optical Unconscious — as our roadmap, we’ll examine classical examples by Jacques-André Boiffard, Hans Bellmer, Paul Nougé, and others and follow their traces into the works of contemporary artists like John Baldessari, Duane Michals, Lucas Blalock, Cindy Sherman, and others.

There will be weekly assignments to further develop your color theory skills. By the end of this course, you’ll have a deeper understanding of color and how to get the best, optimal look for any image.

Supported by in-class critique and brainstorming exercises, you’ll develop your still life ideas into a portfolio. Weekly assignments are customized to each student individually, to help you develop your own voice in the still life genre. This class would be a good opportunity to work on a project or to simply experiment with different techniques each week.

The course is suitable for anyone who wants to engage creatively with the built environment, space, place, and narrative. We'll draw inspiration from architectural photographers, past and present, to consider camera techniques, composition and sequencing, as your work develops through weekly exercises, discussions and critique.

The Life You’re In: The Joy and Pathos of Autobiography (070521)

Photography Shake Up!
This fun summer class will have you saying, “I never would have made photographs like these, and I love it!” Kai McBride has designed a series of weekly prompts that will get you thinking in a fresh way about how you photograph. Whether you are still trying to find your photographic voice or are years into a large body of work, these assignments will challenge your approach to image-making and are guaranteed to knock you out of a creative rut and shake up your photography. We’ll seek inspiration by examining the work of a range of photographers and by the end of this class, you’ll be energized and inspired to expand your photographic vision.
Kai McBride is a photographer, musician, teacher, and avid cyclist who recently uprooted from Brooklyn to sunny Santa Fe, New Mexico. He spent the last ten years teaching photography and managing the photo facilities at Columbia University, his alma mater, where he received an MFA in 2008.
Born on the island of Kauai in 1972, by his 18th birthday Kai had lived in California, Oregon, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Texas, Oahu, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. He sharpened his powers of observation while adjusting to life between suburban ranch-style homes, cabins with no running water, and a 20-foot teepee in the field of a commune.
His photographs have been exhibited in museum and gallery exhibitions, and are held in public and private collections. His first monograph, About Face: Picturing Tampa, was published by SPQR Editions in Fall 2016.

Telling Summer Stories through a Visual Diary
Dates: Wednesdays, Jul 14–Aug 11, 2021
Time: 11am–1pm (ET)
Sessions: 5
Limited enrollment: 12 students
Fee: $390
Presented by the International Center of Photography (ICP). This class delves into creative ways to capture your immediate surroundings — no matter where you are — with images that express the feeling of summer. After months of lockdown and social distancing, how might you explore your immediate environment? We experiment with blending memories and past personal experiences with our “new normal” by examining ways to add text or photos from our archives and discuss how to photograph non-tangibles, like heat, smell, or feelings. We also cover different approaches to telling personal stories by studying the work of artists such as Nina Katchadourian, Hiraki Sawa, Gueorgui Pinkhassov, Robert Adams, and Daniel Ramos, among others. By the end of class, students will have created a visual diary of their summer and deepened their creative and artistic practice. Registration is through the ICP website.
Please note: Open to all skill levels.

Discovering the Poetry in Nighttime Photography
Nighttime is magical — cityscapes buzz with electricity and in nature, trees and meadows are glazed with moonlight. The scarcity of light creates its own particular drama. Taking pictures at night opens up exciting new ways of exploring our surroundings: the streets of our neighborhood, landscapes, and cityscapes, or simply the light in our own home. Through weekly exercises we'll explore seeing and composing in low light to capture the eery and poetic mood it offers. Technical details like long exposure and low-light camera settings, working with a tripod, and dealing in post with digital grain and noise reduction will be covered. An essential part of this class will be to discuss and analyze artistic and technical approaches by other photographers who have worked extensively in low light. As W. Eugene Smith said: “Available light is any damn light that is available.”
Stefan Frank is a photographer and writer, working from Heidelberg, Germany. Way before he came to photography, he studied mathematics and philosophy at Ruhr Universität Bochum and worked as an IT specialist. He studied at Atelier Smedsby with JH Engström and Margot Wallard in Paris in 2017, before he eventually began studying photography at Ostkreuzschule, Berlin, with Peter Bialobrzeski. He graduated in 2023 with the work Irgendwo (“Anywhere”), a project dealing with politically motivated crime and the terror-spree of the far right in Germany. He has been teaching with StrudelmediaLive since 2020, giving courses on surrealism, poetics of space, gestalt theory for photographers, and more. His work has been exhibited in Heidelberg, Frankfurt, and Berlin.

Beyond Documentation: New Approaches to Exploring Family Stories
Explore new ways that go beyond photographing every-day life to delve into your family’s personal stories. These different methods of storytelling can include staging imaginary scenes with family members as models, or working with transforming archival photos. We’ll experiment with using collage, assemblage, and manipulation of images — physically cutting up prints or attaching hand-crafted artifacts (lace, stickers, objects from the past or present) — as a reaction to the pictures. Students will learn to create a structure for working on their project — from developing an idea, research, making a storyboard, and editing, to creating the final presentation. Work by contemporary artists and photographers on family topics will be presented and discussed.
In her artwork, Pustaiová explores role-playing as an element that helps inform the way family members, relatives, and friends relate to one another. With a sense of humor and irony, she uncovers the less obvious stories that exist within a family.
Open to students working with any kind of camera (analog, digital, instant) and any types of prints, and whether their family members are nearby or not.
Zuzana Pustaiová's interest in visual arts began with painting but soon switched to photography, which she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava (Slovakia) where she completed her Ph.D in 2022. Her artwork uses role-playing as a principal tool to explore and reveal the relationships between family members, relatives, friends, and other social groups. With a sense of wit, humor and irony, she uncovers the cultural stereotypes related to gender, age, tradition, and social inclusion. In 2022, her book One Day Every Day was shortlisted for the Paris Photo – Aperture Photobook Award. She has received numerous awards in contemporary photography — including the Grand Prix at the Rovinj Photodays 2021 and Finalist for the 2017 Lucie Foundation Scholarship in Los Angeles. In 2018 she was named Slovak Photographer of the Year. She has exhibited internationally in Europe and Canada and lives and works in Levice and Bratislava.

Enrich Your Photographic Vision: Seeing Through the Eyes of Others
Do you ever wonder how the world looks through another person's eyes? How would a familiar street look to you if you were walking it as a novelist, tour guide, or movie director? What details would suddenly assume new importance? Each week we'll explore our surroundings, imagining ourselves as different types of creators and surveyors — poets, storytellers, and more. In class, we'll look at work from photographers whose images are inspired or influenced by different practices like these, and we'll look for the insights from each of these perspectives to enrich our personal artistic vision. This class is grounded in the tradition of street photography, but all photographers interested in using diverse art and professional disciplines to inform and improve their pictures of the world are welcome.
