Kanal is about quiet moments and brief encounters, nature within an urban environment, and claiming and sharing space. This book contains impressions of a place that, to me, looks different every day and aims to both spur a feeling of curiosity and guide readers in immersing themselves in an unknown world — even if it's a familiar place. The photographs in Kanal were made alongside the Donaukanal (the Danube River) in Vienna between 2021 and 2024. Almost all the photos were shot in vertical format in order to guide the viewer’s gaze. The cover of each book features a unique graffiti spray paint by the author representing a minimalistic illustration of the canal.

Stefan Schauhuber was born in Austria in 1985 and lived in Vienna for almost 20 years. On his daily bike commute, he got to know the Donaukanal (in English, known as the Danube River canal) and its waters and visitors. Bringing along his camera, he went there to enjoy nature, encounter people — and find quiet for himself. Stefan loves to tell stories, meet people, and capture moments. He works as a free-lance journalist, photographer, and is the co-founder of Cornucopia, a storytelling agency based in Austria.
