Repetition as Practice: A Year of Deep Observation
Have you ever been struck by a place you photographed but later wondered whether you made the strongest image possible? What if the light had been different, the leaves off the trees, or your point of view or focal length slightly changed — would the photograph have been stronger? In this class, we aim to find out.
Inspired by the intensity and persistence of Josef Koudelka’s practice (who repeatedly visits and re-photographs locations while referencing the work he previously made there), students will re-visit and re-photograph locations of their own choosing. Meeting eight times from January through December 2026, we’ll share progress, refine approaches, and discuss the evolving body of work.
Over the course of the year, you’ll develop an intimate familiarity with your chosen scenes, gaining insight into how time, weather, and perspective transform them. Guided feedback from Kai and your peers will help you move toward what Koudelka calls “the maximum” photograph of a place. Early sessions will help you select locations — be they rural, urban, domestic, or wilderness — and define parameters to focus your exploration and deepen your seeing.
Kai McBride is a photographer, musician, teacher, and avid cyclist who recently uprooted from Brooklyn to sunny Santa Fe, New Mexico. He spent the last ten years teaching photography and managing the photo facilities at Columbia University, his alma mater, where he received an MFA in 2008.
Born on the island of Kauai in 1972, by his 18th birthday Kai had lived in California, Oregon, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Texas, Oahu, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. He sharpened his powers of observation while adjusting to life between suburban ranch-style homes, cabins with no running water, and a 20-foot teepee in the field of a commune.
His photographs have been exhibited in museum and gallery exhibitions, and are held in public and private collections. His first monograph, About Face: Picturing Tampa, was published by SPQR Editions in Fall 2016.
Kai teaches black and white photography, photobooks, and more for StrudelmediaLive.
